You’ll know a wise man by what he spends his money on.

Some of those at the table were indignant. “Why waste such expensive perfume?” they asked. “It could have been sold for a year’s wages and the money given to the poor!” So they scolded her harshly. But Jesus replied, “Leave her alone. Why criticize her for doing such a good thing to me? You will always have the poor among you… but you will not always have me.”  (Mark 14.4-5)

A gift to God will often look extravagant, even careless. In this case, it was everything. In this way, church leaders often prioritize offerings to Jesus in different ministries or outreaches. They do it without guarantee of a controlled outcome or result. This is called faith.

Ugliness is the 21st Century art. We practice and hone it, filling in hours online to make up for what we did not apply in person. Under the anonymity of ugliness, the perfect reply. An ingenious response. Ugliness outdoing ugliness. And we become sharp and witty and quick and skillful. But there’s nothing unique about ugliness. It is so common it’s become faceless, anonymous even — forgotten. No one will remember you for it. But beauty in relationships, especially anonymous ones, is rare. It is uncommon, has a memory. I have no right to take your time and not return the Word of God.

You can’t expect to hear God’s voice if you don’t open his Word. No one would turn a phone on mute and blame the other person for not talking. God wrote you a love story, a manual, a journal, a personal letter. But you’ll never know what he has to say, and how much he loves you, if you don’t open it.

There is a way that seems right to a man… (Prov.14.12)

Most people who take a path that leads to death, it seems right to. All people who take a path that leads to death, it isn’t the Word of God.

Walk safely. Don’t ignore the road markers.

When fear threatens to paralyze you from doing what’s right, remember the worst anyone can do is crucify you. That’s all they could do to Jesus.

It was the world’s worst all-time fail.

You can protect your image and sacrifice your character or protect your character and sacrifice your image, but you cannot save both. At some point you’ll have to let one die.

The decision you make at that moment will define you.
